About Virus Attack

A webcomic about COVID-19. I started to work on it in early 2020, when the actual pandemic started. It was more a kind of coping mechanism I guess, given the virus scared me as much as everyone else. The fact that I was somehow scared to death of coronaviruses in general, boosted my fear too. But, reading about them and drawing them did help being less fearful of them. Now I love viruses, and coronaviruses are my favorites!

I'm an autistic amateur comic artist from the Netherlands. I never went to school to learn about virology, nor do I work in the field. I'm simply a virus enthusiast and I like to share my interest with others through art.

The Story

Based on the real COVID-19 pandemic, but I added my own imagination too. In the earliest days, Virus Attack was actually planned to be a short documentary type story. With a narrator and normal, non-talking microbes as the characters. I thought that it would be boring, so I decided to make it longer and more of a fantasy story, with talking microbe characters.
It follows virion King Matthias as he tries to create a pack of his own, but slowly destroys his new home (someone's body) in the process. And Erlona, a young neutrophil who wants to stop the infection in order to save her human from a horrible death.

Characters

Most artists would draw human cell and microbe characters as humanoids, think Osmosis Jones for example. Especially with human cells I understand, but I simply can't and dislike drawing anything too 'human' (with exception of furries/anthro animals, yet their human body shape is still too hard to draw). So, I decided to deviate from the humanoid cell and microbe look, and draw them as animals instead. Human cells and good bacteria look the most like normal animals, while everything that causes disease looks more monstrous or alien.

SARS-CoV-2 is the main character in this story. I created a design for this virus first, as well as characters. Its design represents a hellish dog because I love both dogs and hellhounds.

New Look

I'm currently working on a new and better version of the comic, though. The version I originally started with actually was full of errors. I decided to start all over because these errors started to annoy me. Aaaannd... I also wanted to use a more clean looking layout for pages, because my old style started to annoy me too.

The artstyle may seem cute and maybe appealing to younger audience, but Virus Attack is NOT meant to be for young kids! This comic contains strong language, violence, infanticide and death! There's also a devil-figure in later pages, which may scare young children. Also don't read if your're sensitive to mentioned warnings.
